A person can be able to reduce dependence on medication by getting knowledge of natural ways to lower blood pressure. This does not mean that it should be taken but having a normal blood pressure means that too many maintenance drugs will not be required.

Lower the Sodium Intake

The sodium consumption should be limited to less than 1500mg daily. About 1000 mg will be good in most cases but a doctor should be consulted to know which level is suitable. There is no need to increase the sodium intake if the age is 50 years.

A food diary can be maintained in which all the food eaten in a day can be listed down. It will be easy to know the consumption of sodium since all food products list their contents. It should be reduced if it crosses 1500 mg.

Eating lots of vegetables and fish are good ways to lower the blood pressure. Some vegetables contain sodium and precautions can be taken. Fish is a good substitute for meat and pork. Fish should be taken twice a week or more if possible. The spices added in the food should also be reduced.

The amount of processed foods such as frozen dinners should be cut down. Consumption of meat should be limited particularly the cured type like bacon. Bacon does not only contain high amounts of sodium but it is also high in cholesterol. Fruits and whole gains should also be include in the diet.

Lessening the alcohol consumption is another natural way to lower blood pressure. One drink per day will be sufficient. It can be a 12 ounce can of beer or 5 ounce wine glass.  These all should not consumed in one day and only one should make up daily consumption.

Reduce Caffeine Intake

Studies show that some people develop high blood pressure when drinking too much coffee. To know about it, blood pressure should be checked half an hour after consuming a caffeinated drink. If it goes up than caffeine intake should be decreased. The limit should be up to 200 mg per day which is a couple of cups.

Other Natural Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

If stress is unavoidable different methods should be tried for coping with it. Deep breathing can be tried. Relax in a chair. Inhaling deeply and exhaling. It should be repeated ten times. Practicing will be required until a rhythm is developed. This technique should be tried when there are signs of upset  and repeated until one calm’s down.

People and places that bring stress should be avoided. Hobbies like drawing, painting, planting etc. can be started. One should keep his mind occupied on pleasant things and activities. This will have a positive impact on the mood and keep the blood pressure normal.
